A ROMAN CANDLE IN MY HAND

Do you remember roman candles?
I use to love them as a kid
Every 4th of July we’d get them
And, set them off like most folks did

Fireworks weren’t illegal way back then
Got them most anywhere you looked
No one thought much about the danger
Some dry matches was all it took

I think about those roman candles
And, realize what life has done
Made me older and somewhat wiser
Perhaps taking away some fun

As the 4th comes around this July
My life might just have a new plan
Stepping out of my older routine
A Roman candle in my hand

LADY BUG

Are you simply there to decorate the leaf
Showing off all of your orange tones
Or is there much more to you my dear lady bug
Something I really should have known

I’ve heard it said that you spend all of your days
Eating bad bugs in my garden
And I thought you were only a pretty face
I really must beg your pardon

Get back to work my wonderful little friend
The tomatoes and I are smiling
Your secret is safe amongst the plants out there
May the bugs find you beguiling!

FADED MEMORIES

Someone use to live there
Making it a loving home
Someone use to plant there
Working the fertile loam

Now there is no love there
The family moved away
Now fields are dry and bare
Crops turned into dry clay

Does someone remember
When this place was grand?
Knowing of Septembers
And, cultivated land?

The house works its mime
Sharing all that it knows
Through the passages of time
Faded memories still glow

Thoughts Of Dad

He came by the name quite innocently
His friends all loved to say it
Maybe a taunt or just for some fun
They’d find the “game” and play it!

His middle name brought about this ‘nick’
What’s funny about McGhee?
If you’ve heard an old radio show
It’s simple as it can be!

The radio show doesn’t matter
The nick is the story here
How my Dad became known as “Fibber”
Is only partially clear

I have no way of discovering
The details are what I lack
All I have is his scrapbook picture
The name “Fibber” on the back.

He probably wasn’t a liar
It was all done just for fun
My Dad, the greatest jokester of all
From his friends he was outdone

This Father’s Day brings a new question
From a picture I just found
The answer comes from my memories
And, his love that did abound

A ROSE IS A ROSE

Many have written about you
And, tried to tell the tale
Of what makes you strong and mighty
Of what makes you so frail.

Words by the thousands have been said
Even more done in prose
Trying to explain your beauty
The fragrance to the nose

Yet in those explanations
Words turn into such fluff
Perhaps the writer never knew
"A rose IS a rose".... is enough

IF I GOT HIT BY A TRUCK

Do I take my life too casually?
Do I ignore the things that I shouldn't?
Do I walk through each day blissfully?
Just never thinking that I couldn't?
Am I naively thinking I won't die?
Or, simply figure its years away?
And, continue to put off important things
Which are very easy to delay?
What if I got hit by a truck today?
Have I done all I wanted to do?
Or, did I push it aside quietly?
Thinking of all of the time to pursue?
Can I face this reality head on?
Can I get my priorities straight?
Will I have no regrets when that truck comes?
It's a necessity that can't wait.

LATE NIGHT PHONE CALL

The phone rang late one night
I picked it up on ring number three
Before I could even say "Hello"
The voice said "You gotta help me!"
"I'm hot and I'm sweaty and I need you!"
"I can't go on this way!"
I was shocked as I sat and listened
Not knowing what to say
I must have stumbled over some words
Because the voice said "Shhhh!"
I waited to hear what was said next
I heard heavy breathing "Whoooosh"
My heart was racing a mile and hour
I said, "What do you want me to do?"
The voice siad "I'm hot .. so hot"
I knew that I had to hang up
This phone call just had to stop!
Then, the voice said in a breathy voice
"Oh baby.. this is more than I can bear!"
I said "Who the hell is this anyway?"
The voice said "Isn't this Jake's Heating and Air???"

WAITING

A red haired girl from the Northside
Is how it all began
A great tomboy playing softball
But, did she have a plan?
Was there a man in her future?
Did she have a big dream?
Beating the boys on the ball field
In her eye was a gleam.
Time moved along while she waited
Life was not always kind
Yet this "flower" of the Northside
Kept her nose to the grind.
There were times when she wasn't sure
That her hopes would come true
Then she crossed paths with Ronnie
The gleam in her eye grew.
There is no more "Waiting" for Ferne
The marriage is now here
And the memories I share with her
Are so perfectly clear
Raise your glass to the red haired girl
As I remember "when"
My love and my best to you both
Happy wedding my friend!

EASTER LILIES IN MAY?

Look at you! Beautiful Easter lilies!
Brightly blooming in my yard!
But, why couldn’t you have bloomed at Easter?
Hey.. would that have been so hard?
I guess Mother Nature had other plans
Saving your beauty for May
That’s fine with me I love having you here
Blossoming in full array
I’ve taken a lot of pictures of you
In case you aren’t here next year
But, I’ll be hoping that you do show up
I won’t care when you appear
Look at you! Beautiful Easter lilies
How lucky I am to see
This most special flower garden in May
Showing off in front of me!

Remembering Mama

As Mother's Day rolls around this year
I really feel so rotten
Trying to remember early years
That mostly I've forgotten
She knew all of the Glenn Miller songs
And wore Chanel Number Five
Told me all about those good ol' days
Back before I was alive
She could cook and sew like most Mom's did
Teaching me all I could learn
She told me once that I was the best
At getting the toast to burn!
She made a cotton dress for me once
I hated it.. oh my Lord!
Washing and ironing it with spray starch
Made that thing stiff as a board!
Mama had a lot of old sayings
I could barely figure out
I loved to watch her face when she spoke
She was my Mama no doubt!
As Mother's Day rolls around this year
I really feel so rotten
Yet proud of the way she taught me things
Even that dress of cotton

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Since time began, a girl has guessed
If the man she loves, loves her best
A simple test, a sweet daisy
Keeps this miss, from going crazy
It brings to light, what she must know
With little fuss and not much show
Soon the answer will be settled
As she chooses, all the petals
Does he love me or love me not?
Ask the miss who soon ties the knot!

Time Caught Up With Me

Time caught up with me today in such a sad way
Reflections of a childhood long since gone
Remembering the sweet innocence of those days
How I naively took it for granted.

The street in front of my house was a huge playground
I can still hear Mama at our door calling me
I didn’t want to come home while I was playing
I’d give my soul to hear her call me now.

Time takes those days away from every one of us
Our precious memories grow more so each day
Homemade ice cream in the backyard with my Daddy
Oh my how he loved to get that first taste

There are times when I remember those days and smile
This day needs to be about my sadness
Those days with my friends and family are now gone
Time caught up with me in such a sad way

When I Wasn't Lookin'

I don’t watch a lot of television these days
It just doesn’t appeal to me too much
Folks runnin’ around tryin’ to out do the other
Where in the world do they come up with such?
Do they think those people really know how to sing?
They certainly are no “idols” of mine!
And, if I wanted to watch people on an island
I think Gilligan would do me just fine
The days of a good sitcom are just about over
Now., “reality” is the new thing
Eating dirt and who knows what for a few dollars
Is suppose to make me keep watching?
The fact is I’m not in their “target demo” now
“Grandma” should be in the kitchen cookin’!
Well, if I got old it’s a big surprise to me!
Musta happened when I wasn’t lookin’!

Reflections

Stillness that comes from the night’s last breath
Nothing but the beat of a heart
Grab it before it lingers no more
The secrets of now will impart

Reflections of life as it changes
A ripple from a pebble thrown
The days when life was so fresh and new
Fill hearts and minds with what is known

Look back with the same kind reflections
Hold fast to the passion and pain
You’ll press on with great understanding
Through sunshine and even the rain

Forever Friends

Not because we planned it
Fate has made it so.
We didn’t understand it
All those years ago.

I would picked the flowers
You would pull my hair
Then, we’d sit for hours
Thinking up a dare.

Not knowing what would be
As our lives would change
A life for you and me
It seemed much too strange.

But, now it is so fine
My forever friend
To have your life in mine
Such a perfect blend.

Easter Memories

Memories of Easter from my childhood
Come around to visit every year.
The beautiful flowers in every yard
Makes a special mem’ry I hold dear
The dozens of eggs on the stove to boil
The dyes and wax pencils lined up
I loved searching through all of the cab’nets
To find Mama’s old chipped coffee cups
The hot vinegar and dye were added
The wire ring helped place the eggs just so
A few seconds of watching patiently
Brought forth a bounty of eggs to show
Dad, the Easter Bunny, would take each egg
All over our backyard he would hide
My friends and I would look all over the place
‘Cause the gold one had chok’lit inside!
Remembering Easter in a diff’runt way
So many colors from which to choose
Thoughts of a new dress that my Mama picked out
With brand new white patent leather shoes.

Welcome To My Garden

Accentuated in beauty every step of the way
Meant to bring true solace to those that come by
Linger here and find your time of inner peace
Know the meaning of you and the sun and sky
Why do some flowers seem to last for weeks
While others struggle for a few brief days?
And, why should we stop and smell the roses?
Is there some lesson to be learned today?
Welcome to my garden of inner peace
Once you visit you’ll know why you were sent
A time to reflect on all the beauties
Of your life and how your time was well spent.

HAPPY SPRING !

There is no better time to smile
Than when spring is here!
The glow seems to go on for miles
As each flower cheers!
Colors and patterns in each yard
Showing off their best
As if it was some greeting card
About this grand fest!
Here’s wishing you a Happy Spring
Smell all the blossoms!
Mother Nature puts on a show
Which is so awesome!

The Busy Flower

The bee finds the sweetest of nectars
On a blossom in early spring
Born in the last days of winter’s cold
A present mother nature brings
Representing a warm beginning
With the huge honor of “State Flower”
Makes this blossom so very special
Mother nature did empower
Beauty with a wafting aroma
Fills your eyes and your nose just so
The orange blossom here in Florida
Entertains us with her great show
As part of her amazing three "acts"
Her ripened fruit greets us this fall
Give praise to Florida’s orange blossom
The busiest flower of all

Kiss Me .. I'm not Irish!

Lots of rhymes have been written
About St. Patrick’s Day!
The Irish in their wisdom
Know just what words to say!

How do I match the rhymin’
The wishes sweetly done
Of pots of gold and rainbows
I’m just not the right one!

It’s not that I don’t like it
I wear a green shirt too
If there’s a green beer for me
I’ll share a toast with you

True, if I could match what’s done
I’d write for you a wish
St. Patrick’s Day IS for all
Kiss me .. I’m NOT Irish!

It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!

I called in “sick” today
I deserved some time on my own you see?
I’ve been workin’ so hard
I needed to kick back and just be ME!

I’ll get up late to start
And, will plan on doing nothing at all !
If I go ANY place
It’ll be no further than I can crawl !

No need to put on clothes
My nightgown and housecoat suit me just fine!
And, whatever I do
This day is most importantly ALL mine!

So, sit back and watch me
While I experience a day of bliss
Compared to my REAL life..
It doesn’t get any better than this!

The Garden Path

There’s a road ahead of me
That fills me with such wonder
I’ve been told of it’s potential
Like the night sky filled with thunder.

Many people have been led this way
With words of promise and hope
Never giving a second thought
To a horizon they might scope.

Some go along and soon realize
Things aren’t as rosey as they seem
Their faces fill with shock and surprise
Melting away some of their dreams

So, I will choose my steps carefully
But, not in fear or trepidation
Well aware of what lies ahead
When I reach my destination.

I'd git a whoopin'

It was right pretty sittin’ on that shelf
So, I picked it up despite myself
Mama had told me never to touch it
But, I decided it just had to be!

Before I knew it there was a loud crash
I looked at the floor and there in a flash
Was Mama and me starin’ at the mess
That was when I knew I’d git a whoopin’

“What did I tell you?” she looked straight at me
“Never to touch it” came right out of me
“Go git me a switch” those dreaded five words
Echoed through my brain as I walked outside

This wasn’t the first nor would it be last
But I knew better than to talk some sass
She had made it clear time and time a’gin
If I don’t do right I’d git a whoopin’

Whoopin’s ain’t allowed nowadays they say
Treat ‘em with kindness .. let’m have their way
It appears to me if they could feel it
The hurt of that switch would make a mind right

Could you imagine if with just one look
The kids nowadays would know all it took
To make Mama mad is what you don’t do
Gittin’ a whoopin’ just might be the cure

As I reflect back on those early days
And, how Mama was so set in her ways
I remember it and think of her love
Glad she taught me why I’d git a whoopin’

Walk With Me

Each day becomes more precious to me
As my life passes along
Knowing I’ll have you to walk with me
Makes me feel so very strong
The bad times may outweigh the good times
If only for a short while
We’ll take everything one at a time
Handling it all in style
Walk with me as we discover things
What lies just over the hill
Will be an exciting adventure
Because you walk with me still

Leap Year Theory

I have a theory about Leap Year
It came to me just today
When I noticed that again this year
We are short by just one day
I've been told of some odd theories
This helps us to catch the sun?
I know that there IS a good reason
I really don't know which one
My theory is quite simple
Has nothing to do with fact
I'm looking at who started it
I'm convinced it was a pact!
It was all begun by a woman
Who was born on two two nine
When someone said a day has to go
She said "By all means, take mine!"
She gets to skip three of her birthdays
And, cleverly remains young
This lady deserves a round of applause
A hero who is unsung!

So Beautiful!

Painted with the thoughts of spring
So beautiful and so bright
Seeking refuge from the cold
In the warmth of the light.
How precious each petal can be
Like each day in a life
Hoping to remain this way
With no struggle or strife.
But, flowers fade and life goes on
And, we take them as we can
Remembering how the petals looked
So beautiful and so grand.

Maxie & Dusty - A Dog's Life

Hey, a dog's life can get pretty rough!
It's not all 'walks in the park' for me!
I tell you my days can get really tough
There's a lot to do.. don't you see?
I'm the first one up at dawn's early light
To get the family ready for the day!
They would never, ever get it done right
If they didn't have me in the way!
I must stand guard and watch the home
While the family goes outside
I'm not really sure where they roam
I don't always go for the ride.
Then, when they come back, it's up to me
To jump and bark and pant
To let them know how much they missed me
Ignore them? No, I can't!
Oh and there's the exercise they get
When taking me for a walk
I wonder if they appreciate me yet
Hmmm.. I sure wish I could talk!
And, as the day ends and they all go to bed
I walk around and stand guard
And, think of the last time I was fed
You see a dog's life IS really hard!

Snowetry -Days End

This old rodeo cowboy in the hills of NJ was putting the horses away when the cameraman wandered by. It is a classic scene. The snow scenes in the "Snowetry" series are in a "relaxation" video available from Buzz Creek and other national sources. It is scenes from this "SNOWFALL SERENADE" that are finding new purpose in the "SNOWETRY" videos containing the words and wonder of M J Trenkler. A DVD with 12 of Scarlett's "Snowetry" poems is available. visit Rhyme Creek.

The Essence of a woman

Sweet in her thoughtful daily life
Proud of family she loves
Strong when her day comes crashing down
Beautiful in long white gloves

The essence of a woman lives
In so many different ways
Kindness, passion, wisdom and fear
Can be seen in just one gaze

The true essence of a woman
May never be known by men
The mystery will keep them intrigued
While the woman decides when

There's A Chill In The Air

Colder than you can ever imagine
The wind cuts through you like a knife
And, the stark imagines out the window
Could make a memory in your life.

The pond looks like a sheet of glass
Lying in the framework of the snow
Catching glimpses of the snowflakes
Is it a picture that you should know?.

Winter.. in all of it’s powerful glory
Puts on a big show this time of year
And, makes all of us stop and wonder
Was our life really spent with no fear?

There’s a chill in the air this night
And, it could help you realize
That the story out the window
Is a reflection from your eyes.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY !

A pack of pretty greetin’ cards
Is what I remember best
Some covered with lotsa glitter
Out shinin’ all of the rest!

Red hearts in all shapes and sizes
Each printed with sweet little rhymes
Askin’ the ones that received ‘em
If they’d be my Valentine!

It was fun to give mine out first
And, hide in the back to see
When they read those pretty cards
What they would say about me!

I always got a lotta cards too
My friends were so sweet back then
Delightin’ me with what they said
And, signing their names in PEN!

Valentine’s Day was so much fun
When I was near eight or nine.
Each one brings a smile to my face
Those Valentine days of mine!

Now I have a new group of friends
Who mean all the world to me
And as they read these words I write
I’ll be watching quietly.

I hope they’ll think of big red hearts
And, remember those sweet rhymes
Knowing it’s from MY heart I ask
“Won’t YOU be my Valentine???”

Memories of the ol' wood shed

Grandpa loved his ol' wood shed
And, spent many a day there.
He worked on that ol' tractor
And, whistled without a care.

He smelled of hay and pipe tobacco
And, I loved to be by his side.
He said if I fed all of the horses
He would take me for a ride.

Grandpa worked hard in his day
Loved his family and that shed
When I would visit in the summer
His stories would fill up my head!

Such memories of the ol' wood shed
Tucked back out of the way
Where Grandpa made me feel special
I remember it like yesterday.

THINK SPRING!

When winter seems to drag on
And, the snow stacks high
Think Spring!

When you have your thick coat on
And, snow fills the sky
Think Spring!

When the cold blast hits your face
And, you cannot speak
Think Spring!

But, when you fall on your butt
And, you say “What tha?”
Think Florida!!!

Yester Years

Was it twenty years or maybe more
Life moves along so fast
Remembering all those precious times
We thought would always last

A time when all the days were care free
Yet we didn’t know it then
It’s only with time that those days shine
Looking back at them again.

Oh happy times from those days of yore
Makes the yearning heart reach out
Knowing those feelings and all the years
Makes us glad to think about

SNOWETRY - GLiding With Geese

This is a great new project!
I have always found a lot of inspiration to write poetry when I'm able to see some beautiful scenery. In the Snowetry series, there are poems which I have written and recorded. Each of them is illustrated by some truly magnificent winter scenes from ME3TV and Buzz Creek. Here is one of the Snowetry videos. You can see more of them at our new store at RHYME CREEK at LULU. These are WMV files you can buy and download for repeated sending to friends. All of the footage in our snowfall video was shot in Sussex County, New Jersey. Space Farms Zoo was the location for the Bison and most of the wild animals.

The Night That I Got Shot

What a wonderful, exciting night
A play at our high school
Lots of auditions then rehearsals
Everyone felt so cool

It began as everyone had planned it
The scenery looked so real
The actors started the show in style
Knowing this was a big deal

Charlie forgot an important line
Sarah whispered it to him
Frank forgot to open the curtain
Things started to look grim

All in all the play was quite a hit
The crowd gave an ovation
Our little group was very proud
We caused such a sensation

Back in the hall behind the stage
Randy walked up with a gun
I thought he was kidding around
He even said this is all such fun

I said that gun is only a prop
It doesn’t really work
He looked at the gun and then at me
His face had such a smirk

How fast he put that gun to my throat
A second passed no more
And, when he pulled that trigger
I found myself on the floor

My ears were ringing from the noise
I could no longer hear
The gun was real yet fired a blank
What did I have to fear?

People quickly gathered around me
I couldn’t hear them at all
Randy dropped the gun and ran
I was propped up against the wall

My hearing came back in a little while
The burns on my neck healed
It could have been the end of it all
I learned how that might feel

I don’t remember the name of the play
I really don’t recall a lot
I only remember Randy and that gun
And, the night that I got shot

Horseback Ride

HORSEBACK RIDE

The freedom of a horseback ride
impressed me as a child..
Considering most of the rest of
my life was really quite mild.

To climb on top of a wonderful "beast"
and let the breeze just flow..
Helped me touch that freedom
that I might not ever know.

Of course, as a child I simply thought
it was great to be able to ride..
Not really giving much thought to
the pleasure I felt deep inside.

I was just at my Granddaddy's farm
enjoying some wonderful fun..
It wasn't until many years later..
that I knew what that ride had done.

Could I ride real fast and hang on tight
and not fall to the ground?
I think I might just "dare"..
since my Mama wasn't around!

It was so high up on that chestnut horse
I felt like I was a queen..
Looking out upon my family
and hoping to be "seen"!

As I look back on those days and try
to remember what my life was then..
I think of the special times in the country..
on a horse.. up high.. with a grin.

Precious days.. precious people..
precious pictures.. precious times..
The freedom of a horseback ride..
made this "little girl" feel so fine!

Writing explained

What does it take to write a line
And, have it make some sense
How do I make them fall in line
And, not sound quite so dense
Do I create for days on end
Struggling with the rhyming
Or, do I write real fast and SEND
No thought of the timing?
People will ask me from to time
To explain what all I do
How do I go from rhyme to rhyme
And, still make sense to you?
After spending some time in thought
I’ve come to realize
It’s not the writing that I was taught
It’s the reading in your eyes.

An inspiring picture for any writer !

A DAY AT THE BEACH

Ahhh.. another day at the beach
A perfect one indeed.
The beauty just beyond my reach
Yet I find what I need.

The pier reaches out to touch the shore
And, it makes me feel so grand
I’ll want to linger even more
If we walk there hand in hand.

Fishermen sit and watch the waves
Do they ever catch a thing?
Or, is it time alone they crave?
To listen to the seagulls sing!

Take my hand let’s see what’s there
For you and I to see..
Will we lose all of our cares..
As we walk by the sea?

Just like life .. a walk on the shore
Will offer you many different things.
The sand.. the wind.. the waves .. much more
Just listen to hear your heart sing!
