I'd git a whoopin'

It was right pretty sittin’ on that shelf
So, I picked it up despite myself
Mama had told me never to touch it
But, I decided it just had to be!

Before I knew it there was a loud crash
I looked at the floor and there in a flash
Was Mama and me starin’ at the mess
That was when I knew I’d git a whoopin’

“What did I tell you?” she looked straight at me
“Never to touch it” came right out of me
“Go git me a switch” those dreaded five words
Echoed through my brain as I walked outside

This wasn’t the first nor would it be last
But I knew better than to talk some sass
She had made it clear time and time a’gin
If I don’t do right I’d git a whoopin’

Whoopin’s ain’t allowed nowadays they say
Treat ‘em with kindness .. let’m have their way
It appears to me if they could feel it
The hurt of that switch would make a mind right

Could you imagine if with just one look
The kids nowadays would know all it took
To make Mama mad is what you don’t do
Gittin’ a whoopin’ just might be the cure

As I reflect back on those early days
And, how Mama was so set in her ways
I remember it and think of her love
Glad she taught me why I’d git a whoopin’

I think it's rather appropriate that my first "Southern" poem on this Blog comes straight from my childhood! I hope you enjoy it and reflect on yours too!

Hi Scarlet,
Whooping is the way to go. Need to have something to keep control. The alternative is being spoilt.
