A ROMAN CANDLE IN MY HAND

Do you remember roman candles?
I use to love them as a kid
Every 4th of July we’d get them
And, set them off like most folks did

Fireworks weren’t illegal way back then
Got them most anywhere you looked
No one thought much about the danger
Some dry matches was all it took

I think about those roman candles
And, realize what life has done
Made me older and somewhat wiser
Perhaps taking away some fun

As the 4th comes around this July
My life might just have a new plan
Stepping out of my older routine
A Roman candle in my hand

LADY BUG

Are you simply there to decorate the leaf
Showing off all of your orange tones
Or is there much more to you my dear lady bug
Something I really should have known

I’ve heard it said that you spend all of your days
Eating bad bugs in my garden
And I thought you were only a pretty face
I really must beg your pardon

Get back to work my wonderful little friend
The tomatoes and I are smiling
Your secret is safe amongst the plants out there
May the bugs find you beguiling!

FADED MEMORIES

Someone use to live there
Making it a loving home
Someone use to plant there
Working the fertile loam

Now there is no love there
The family moved away
Now fields are dry and bare
Crops turned into dry clay

Does someone remember
When this place was grand?
Knowing of Septembers
And, cultivated land?

The house works its mime
Sharing all that it knows
Through the passages of time
Faded memories still glow

Thoughts Of Dad

He came by the name quite innocently
His friends all loved to say it
Maybe a taunt or just for some fun
They’d find the “game” and play it!

His middle name brought about this ‘nick’
What’s funny about McGhee?
If you’ve heard an old radio show
It’s simple as it can be!

The radio show doesn’t matter
The nick is the story here
How my Dad became known as “Fibber”
Is only partially clear

I have no way of discovering
The details are what I lack
All I have is his scrapbook picture
The name “Fibber” on the back.

He probably wasn’t a liar
It was all done just for fun
My Dad, the greatest jokester of all
From his friends he was outdone

This Father’s Day brings a new question
From a picture I just found
The answer comes from my memories
And, his love that did abound

A ROSE IS A ROSE

Many have written about you
And, tried to tell the tale
Of what makes you strong and mighty
Of what makes you so frail.

Words by the thousands have been said
Even more done in prose
Trying to explain your beauty
The fragrance to the nose

Yet in those explanations
Words turn into such fluff
Perhaps the writer never knew
"A rose IS a rose".... is enough

IF I GOT HIT BY A TRUCK

Do I take my life too casually?
Do I ignore the things that I shouldn't?
Do I walk through each day blissfully?
Just never thinking that I couldn't?
Am I naively thinking I won't die?
Or, simply figure its years away?
And, continue to put off important things
Which are very easy to delay?
What if I got hit by a truck today?
Have I done all I wanted to do?
Or, did I push it aside quietly?
Thinking of all of the time to pursue?
Can I face this reality head on?
Can I get my priorities straight?
Will I have no regrets when that truck comes?
It's a necessity that can't wait.
