BACK WHEN THEY WERE HERE

I long for a time that’s forever gone

Back when they were here

When bruise knees were kissed to make it better

Tissues for my tears

When school was out and vacations were planned

Back when they were here

My biggest worry was what I would wear

Whispers in my ear

I had to wait ‘til the end of the day

Back when they were here

To see and talk, sharing life’s ups and downs

In the strange frontier

My life was certainly a lot different

Back when they were here

The true meaning of a lifetime ago

Peers at me through tears

So, I spend today thinking of the time

Back when they were here

Smiles will come from all the fun that we had

That I hold so dear

THE VALENTINE'S DAY ICON

When someone thought of an icon
To represent Valentine’s Day
A kid with a bow and arrow?
What were they thinking anyway?

Oh, I get the hearts and flowers
That makes perfect sense to me
A kid with a bow and arrow?
With the name of “Cupid”, oh gee!

A card shaped in a big red heart
Is an icon that would be nice
A kid with a bow and arrow?
I believe they should have thought twice

Jewelry and did I say .. jewelry
Is a grand expression of love
A kid with a bow and arrow?
How about a lovely white dove?

Valentine’s Day will make hearts sing
Best to spend it with your sweetheart
A kid with a bow and arrow?
It’s just not my favorite part

LIKE A FOG

Clouds of dust hover over the dirt roads
Like a fog on a log in a bog
The heat of the day kept everyone inside
In a hole like a mole with a cold

The path to the house had weeds all around
Too excess, tangled mess, I digress
On the door of the house was a large gnome
When first seen, bluish green, sort of mean

As I walked up the steps to the front door
Man in black, heart attack, can’t go back
He looked out at me through a torn curtain
Gave a nod, this was odd, oh my gawd!

As the door opened, I thought I was dead
Like a bug, in a rug, he’s a thug!
He pointed to a chair for me to sit
Like a dope on a rope there’s no hope

I politely handed him a flyer
Can he read? Should I plead? Will I bleed?
The smile on his face helped my heart restart
Not too bad, I’m not had I might add

I asked him if he liked pretty pictures
That was dumb! Where’s his gun? I must run!
Then, quickly added.. “..with poetry too!”
Into rhymes? Not this slime! I’ll buy time

“You see, it’s pretty pictures of snowfall”
He stood up, so close up! I’m a shlup!
“With nice poetry and it’s even my voice!”
What a look! He’s a crook! Goose is cooked!!

He opened his wallet and gave me cash
Sweet Aunt Nell! William Tell! Ring that bell!
“I’ll buy all of your DVDs, my friend!”
I’ll be dang! What large fangs! Alarm RANGGGGG!

GET UP OFF YOUR BUTT

Life comes along in drips and drabs
As you sit around on your butt
What new and exciting is there
To help you get out of your rut?

What have you thought you’d like to do
If ever there was enough time?
I bet you can think of some things
While I continue with this rhyme!

You could make something with your hands
Like jewelry or knitting yarn
You could call a friendly farmer
With an offer to “muck” his barn!

What about writing poetry?
You’ve got it in you, I would bet!
Don’t start saying you don’t know how!
You haven’t even tried it yet!

How about taking a few classes?
Learn a trade or something brand new
It will bring out your very best
And, you’ll be really proud of you

So, don’t sit around and wonder
Find something that means a whole lot
And, pretty soon you’ll be smiling
So happy with all that you’ve got!
